stupid 'comfort' made me use uncomfortable english. urgh. how long have i not touched english. -.-

My friend and i flagged down one of the worst comfort cab rides ever near marina bay MRT. When we boarded the cab and told the driver the destination, he said that he just came from that direction and we should not be wasting his fuel! We paid for the extra fuel surcharge but we certainly DID NOT pay for an extra attitude by the driver. He drove us into a wrong route and made us miss our ship! I strongly believe Comfort, other than providing taxi drivers with a profession and better life, aims to provide a smoother journey for their customers. Moreover, is this attitude supposed to be reflected as a general company attitude? This is not the first time I have lodged complains about comfort cab drivers - and yet, I have yet to see any improvement in the drivers' attitude! I speculate that if faithful customers were to encounter such experience, they would lose faith in the company like yours truly. I trust the company to ruminate into such problems and hope that there will be improved attitudes by the taxi drivers in future.

damn it. how fake. BUT WHAT HAPPENED WAS TRUE! ROAR. i'm pissed.

we had the lovely koreans leave singapore yesterday and taiwan people coming for performance yesterday too.

meanwhile, the post turandot blues.

even chinese instrumentalists were singing it while waiting for things to be uploaded on the bus to the chalet.

it seems, that turandot has become part of our lives.

like daily, 7pm talk at green room, make up and stuff done by 5 pm,
own warm ups in the room done by kaixin and raymond(?).

urgh. this feeling sucks.

no matter what others say about our performance,
the NAFA chorus isnt made up of all vocal majors.
make this clear, it's our module. so dont expect SO much from us.

It's not like we owe you a living. so even if we sing out of tune, dont pick on us unless you can sing better.

And even if you sing better, too bad, they didn't pick you for the performance.

don't be jealous adn start criticizing us, loser.

the dramatic tenor of Calaf's Nessun Dorma in Act III, Scene I. And although China-born Tao Weilong's Calaf was certainly not disappointing, the late Luciano P. would be pleased to know that he alone holds the key to what must be the most hummable operatic tune to date.

But back to the Fatty issue.

Two sopranos were slated to take the starring role of Princess Turandot, each alternating for every evenings' performance. I suppose those high notes really take a toil on your vocal chords. We got Kim Young-Ae, a Voice major of the Seoul National University. Young-Ae sings beautifully and she has performed the role of Turandot to critical acclaim extensively. Unfortunately, she came across more like a Queen than a Princess. A Princess whose hand in marriage Princes the world over have come to ask with much trepidation.

Young-Ae, you see, is more Lard than Lithe. My partner remarked that perhaps her size gave her a bigger diaphragm and lungs to hit those high notes (alot of good singers are on the big side, consider most recently Paul Potts, who incidentally has a popular rendition of Nessun Dorma as well). But I was too distracted by the Baby Elephant on stage, and I still wonder why SLO Director Lo King-man chose to have such a fatty play a icy-cold and desirable Princess. It certainly spoilt it for me, Big Time (no pun intended!).

So when the opera came to an end, and the cast took turns, one by one, to stand at the edge of the stage to receive the Clapped Accolades from the audience, the loudest applause and Bravos were reserved for pretty and petite Filipina, Rachelle Gerodias instead. Rachelle having played the role of Liu, the young slave girl secretly in love with Calaf.

I felt bad for Young-Ae afterwards. But someone please tell her to take out the Ex-cess before becoming a Prin-cess.

i saw this on yingying's blog and thought about it:

i finally found a loophole in singapore's education. the problem with it is that there's always a MODEL ANSWER for every question here. duh. so typical. haha. ok, here's the story. this afternoon, i went to some 'hk tea house', there was this lady who brought her 2 daughters there probably for lunch. during ordering, we have to write the table number on top of the order sheet. ok, so one of her girls asked the waitress which table number should they write since they have 2 table numbers. (the 2 tables were combined together). and the waitress said "just write any number" and walked away (u knw when waitresses are busy and all). and then the girl gave a really confused look and then a this-is-not-acceptable-i-need-a-model-answer look. you see the problem with our kids? there is not flexibility with our answers now. i remember wheni was her age, i was also like that. always looking for THE MODEL ANSWER. anything else is UNACCEPTABLE. maybe this is how we were taught. but seriously, our kids now should learn how to accept flexible answers. =)

i think if i'm the girl in the cafe, i would have just added the two table's number up and write it there so that the waitress couldnt find the table and so that it gives me an excuse to write in to complain about slow service and poor attitude.

ans yes, another loophole in s**ga**re's attitude towards ~~complains~~ everything.
you have to write in.
it takes days to process. when it processes, it goes through many hands and just before it gets to the i/c, it gets thrown into the garbage bin. reason being, the i/c has so much more important stuff to do, he or she cant be bothered with your 'for-your-own-good-complain-letter'.

okay. rather, not only s**ga**re's system.

even in school you have to do that in order to get to the principal.
we dont get any say.
we pay so much school fee and cant get whoever we want to teach/conduct us in specific studies.
how ridiculous. then what does the school do to the money? build more campus ah? let more innocent students come in so that they can cheat more money and continue their 'con-cycle'.
even by using the money we've raised during certain events to go overseas, we have to write in to appeal. and after a year or so, what do we get? NOTHING.

come on.

next time even during lectures we have to write in to go to the toilet already.

WHY?
cos we are using excess water, tissue paper, air fresher-ner and electricity.

when we want to practice in studios, we have to write in.

WHY?
cos we're using excess electricity, garbage bin plastic bags and excess manpower in cleaning the place up.

and guess what, all the schedules for going to toilet/ using studios have to be written in before school reopens so that they can allocate time slots, save electricity, SAVE THE EARTH.

oh! not forgetting, all these takes TIME to process. your appeal might get lost in TIME. so.. you might not be able to go toilet in school. how exciting, isnt it?

隔天早上我们就搭了bullet train 到台北去。

台北柳琴室内乐团的总监邀请了我们到她家去吃晚饭。
她家超漂亮的！
客厅有酒吧，
basement里有一个琴房，专门让柳琴室内乐排练用（可想有多么的大！）
还有一个隔音的音乐厅！
简直是梦想家园啊！
郑老师和苏老师也送给我们一人一份的《雨后庭院》和《Cat's 无言歌》。
还附上了他们的亲笔签名！

Stumbled across wanying's blog and saw this:

Maybe i should blog abt the concert... but actually there isn't much... cos many things can't be described in words.

So.. as usual... actually not very usual cos we only started that last year... we met up be4 concert at vivo... talk rubbish and bitch for a while be4 deciding to have our lunch at like 2pm when we were supposed to meet at 12pm. Apparently... most ppl were late... including me.. partly cos it was raining.. partly cos i couldn't really get myself awake enough... =x

Anyway.. pasta-ed for lunch... then went to get things for our mortal.. lotsa fun and laughter in Candy Empire. Would nv forget the first time i introduced our heavenly chocolate to joel. haha! So we bought one each.. (of cos it is more ex now~!) But we were happily eating that seriously. :) Then our routine to the arcade... but.. NO MORE Photohunt!!! DOTX. so sian-ed. Stayed there and watch the rest play until 4.30pm and we decided to move ourselves to SCH. Yes.. it's 1h but knowing the ppl... we will take eons to get to SCH. even though it's only 2 mrt stops away. lol.

After the week's intense practices... it's finally the day we show our hardwork for the past 5+months... the only song i was worried abt was the last song... cos there are some parts that i know i still couldn't catch... sometimes can.. sometimes cannot. it's really like super fast lah... lol. But i really like all the songs this year. And esp. the last song too - GaDa MeiLin. It's really a piece that will get ur emotions moving...

The concert itself is really successful lah... we were so funny we asked yao laoshi if he's nervous be4 the start.. haha! He said 'no' so i jokingly said that i am. haha! He's quite shocked and said... '等一下我们多交流就可以了。' He's really very nice... :) And i think the soloists have done us proud!! :))) Both of them are really good players of their instru.

The after-concert is also unforgetable... we had a very very long supper or dinner for some of them at marina square's HK cafe. Although i wasn't sitting with the usual grp of ppl... but eventually we had a lot to talk abt... the uniqueness i find in co ppl... there's always non-stop topics regarding co to talk abt... seriously. even with the most unfamiliar person... you can find something to talk abt that is related to co. And that is what i like abt co too. Becos it's so easy to know each other. So easy to relate everything. So easy to bond. :)

But the funny thing is.. every year syco just feels so different... even with the same ppl.. it doesn't feel the same. Becos every year there's new things to enjoy... new ideas to make sy interesting. For this year esp. with the Angel and Mortal game... At least each person will get to know another new person... And more ppl get together to talk abt their angels and mortal. I feel very happy to be able to give. :) And then even with the same kind of mindset... it just doesn't feel the same... Both years i went up the stage with the thinking that it is my last year with syco... The difference is.. thou last year i keep thinking of leaving... but i wasn't that serious abt it and i know i feel like staying... but this year i know it is going to be what i think and the feeling is more true and more vivid. Becos i know that i dun have a choice but i will have to leave. How i wished my year 3 of studies is not going to be what it's like. But... i really hate to admit that i really do not have a choice. It was hard to make a decision last year becos i still have a choice... but it really wasn't as hard as facing my only choice this year.

Actually i ticked 'i am interested to join next year'... but i'm not very hopeful abt it... esp. when i can foresee how my life would be like having night classes for the whole year 3 and the thesis that i have to write. I know the possibility is the lowest i can ever think of.

I nv liked to say goodbye becos i know... nothing will be the same anymore. And the fact that close friends in syco asked me to stay and said that they will miss me makes it even more saddening to say goodbye to them. I think i've really gained a lot the past 4 years in sy. time really flies and this will really be my last concert with sy. I wun be participating in the next 2 concerts. so good luck to the rest of the members. I may be back in the future.. but future is always filled with uncertainty.. so i can't promise.

Lastly, just want to say...

I LOVE SYCO.

she triggered me to write about syco.

SYCO year 1:

the orchestra was indeed, the smallest you've ever seen. but i cannot deny that there were superb players. it was like an orchestra with elite players who werent from *censored*co.

it felt like a little family.
ranging from darrel, to eugene, to pengbin, to riyang, to xin tian, to waifoong, to faisal, to peiqian, to jason, to mingkuang, to weijie, to kangren, to jonathan, to chenwei(when he was still playing daruan), to benda, to william, to weikang, to tingkai, to jonathan lau, to win hung, to qinglun, to gabriel pophilat, to zhenyao, to michelle, to jiawei, to bryan, to jingxuan, to yunyi, to kaiyi, to yiting, to oswald, to colin, to me, to everyone.

there was music, there was love.
though we didnt have crazy times as such we have now. but everyone gathered at SCH before 6.30 every practice. some came as early as 2pm just to practice.
sound quality was stretched to the extreme.

it was the first formation of east-side clan.

SYCO year 2:

many left. leaving only a few.
a new batch of erhu came in.
initially, it wasnt acceptable for the oldies cos the difference was too big.
but after sometime, it was taken in.

they improved (:

orchestra wasnt close though. east-side clan grows from a pathetic 4 to a few more.

SYCO year 3:

erhu people came and left again. a new batch of erhu.
as per usual, it started out pretty bad when people dont know each other.
as time gets by, people gets closer, and soon to music-making together.

day camp was introduced by syco member committee to grow bonds.

east-side clan grows bigger.

SYCO year 4:

many erhu people stayed, stabilizing a few seats.
fun people came in. bringing more fun and laughter.

even though music wasnt of exceedingly good quality, there was love on stage.

1st year with coloured-tees week.
mass convos almost everynight, creating the New Oap Uk!!! group.

east-side clan grows even more.
and north-west clan is officially introduced.

more gatherings were created so that friendship could bond.
more people go for gatherings as people of their sides came.

more friendship, less people leaving (:

SYCO year 5:

mco people came flooding in for auditions. maybe because of liu.
pretty fun seeing people of another orchestra crashing in.
initially there were a few notorious names. but after that i found them pretty okay.

it was overall a pretty fun year despite some incidents (oh,whatever in kenny's face)
with a conductor we all love.
with a clan we love.
with my angel and mortal whom i'm absolutely in love and filled with gratitude.
with our sections that have been going all right.
with shopping and ss which made it really unforgettable and hard to part.
with annual coloured-tees week.
with much love by tsung yeh who came down to practice with us when we're still not much prepared for ga da mei lin.
with much concern of everyone's angel.
with the gifts spreaded across the room hours before concert.
with the never dying smiles
with the man whom obviously is emoing and yet smiles to others so that he could cheer us all up.
with the suppers at lps, creating the lpsco.

dont you see SYCO grow and blossom?
from strangers to orchestra mates, from orchestra-mates to acquaintance.
from acquaintance to friends, from friends to friends with love that will never die.

even though i know some orchestras out there dislike us, you have your pros and cons, we have ours.
overall, we all have fun. isnt it a good thing?

shopping with yao was really cool today (:
everyone was late. so he waited for us. haha! cool shit. he waited okay!
wanying and i reached first cos apparently we boarded the same train. met yao and went food republic to wait for zhiwen and joel cos apparently they're on their way and yao wanted a place to sit. haha! yao treated dessert. hmmm.. should i say treated or forced? okay. anyway, he forced me to have dessert but he treated anyway. he was saying "aloevera's good for skin, girls like it alot. so eat, okay?" then i'm like "?! uh.. orh, orh" cool shit. zhiwen and joel met. went to reds for ss haircut. while we all proceeded to heerens to get num shirt for dear ss. glam shirt speaks: "i declared myself mister vainpot" i know la. its mean to do that. but we thought that it would be cool. afterall, it looked really good on him. and i really mean it! the colour looks really pretty! okay, lazy to elaborate already. anyway, we had good time (:

this week's changed many of us. moulded us into people who bring happiness to others while others bring joy to us. moulding us into jigsaw puzzles that fit into each other to form a big family of syco in year 2008. such wonderful memories. i feel nostalgic. last year, we had similar memories but with a different clan. precious, they are. precious.

i'm loving every day.

i hate it when people dont practice, dont bother to come early to practice (like gabriel and eugene in the first year, who comes hours before practice starts just to practice parts they're unsure of, making sure that they wouldnt be the one stopping the entire orchestra) and still come LATE for practices.

it irks especially when the concert is 2 days away, well, for yesterday, it was 3 days away.

and come on, the entire orchestra is already obviously PISSED at you.

cant you hear the smirks when you bring halt to the orchestra?

i mean.. its not your fault to be stupid.
but it is your fault by NOT MAKING AN EFFORT TO PRACTICE.

it's been 5 years going 6 for me and i dont want to see a failure in this SYCO concert just because of a pesky person like you.

even if you dont see people practicing 2 months ago, at least now they are able to go twice as fast as what they can do.
or perhaps, in some cases, their parts are not as obvious.

SYCO practises always gets fun only towards the end. D: Almost all wore RED for practise today! Even Maestro wore the same colour as us! Lol, it was coincidental. Too bad yss didn't wear the same colour as us. We told him to but he said that he was not informed of! =.=

I didn't know it was Maestro who conducted us today, so.. I didn't practise Gada Meilin. Died totally for all the running notes! :/ Ling laoshi came and hear us as well! :D YSS so ke lian, waited for so long then he can conduct. LOL. Man, I'm sure gonna miss yss alot alot!

今天，就让我以中文写份日志吧。

先说前天晚上的音乐会吧!

拉弦弹拨一家亲！果然是一家亲啊！

不过我觉得《京那巴鲁山神祭》写得还蛮有趣的，可能是因为在演奏的每一个时候都会有5-7个旋律在奏。不过，这个作品还是写得太现代化了，我还未能适应。哈哈。

黄晨达的《酒狂》，黄安源的《天山风情》和俞嘉的《春秋》，一个字，“赞！”。哈哈！虽然《春秋》的开头是有点让我失望…不过整体来看，还是很不错的一个演出！

最后是他们父子俩的《双千金二胡与协奏—广东音乐联奏》和 Encore 的一首《赛马》— 真是（西安话所谓的）“美得很”！默契是无人能比的！台上隐藏着的父爱真是非笔墨能形容的！看了的心情更是感动呀！

错过了这音乐会的人真是错过了一个超赞的演出啊！

接着， 26.05.08

早上和下午都在家里度过。哈哈！太懒惰出门了啦—晚上还有排练呢！累死了。
不过，排练还是没那么闷啦。

排练过后，俊源还启动了整个乐团给我唱了《生日快乐》。
看了也知道一定是智文的馊主意。哈哈！
不过我真得很感动。只差一霎那的泪水。哈哈！
（老师说过不管发生什么事都不能哭，所以没办法，只好忍着。）
过后他们还为我在休息室庆祝了一下。
一看，啊！好多人啊！
又感动了一下。

很感谢郑智文和 PAULINE 买的蛋糕！

哈哈！因为智文叫我要感谢她，所以就写得特别大。哈哈！

昨天早上和下午过得虽然平平淡淡，可是晚上真的非常开心

《嘎达梅林交响诗》的背景

产生流传于内蒙古哲里木盟一带。依据嘎达梅林起义的历史事件创作而成。嘎达梅林，蒙古名为那达木德，汉名孟青山，乳名“嘎达”。成年之后，在达尔罕旗王府任梅林职，掌管军事。所以人们又称他为嘎达梅林。他领导的这次起义爆发于1929年哲里木盟达尔罕旗（今科左中旗），这是一次反对军阀张作霖和蒙古王公屯垦开荒、掠夺人民的起义斗争。前后历时数年，扩展到四、五个旗县，是蒙古族现代史上著名的人民起义，影响很大。

　　嘎达梅林的民歌产生在起义以后不久，开始以抒情短歌流传，以后逐渐形成为一首概括嘎达梅林起义全过程的叙事长诗。

　　长诗成功地塑造了嘎达梅林这一英雄形象，刻画了他的叛逆性格。他开始劝说王爷停止出卖土地，遭到革职处分，最后向张作霖为民请命，又被投入监狱，判处死刑。残酷的斗争现实使他幻想破灭，被救出后毅然举行了起义。转战数年,最后在强大敌人的联合进攻下,西拉木伦河一战，部众全部战死。他弹尽粮绝，誓不投降，在泅渡至河中心时中弹牺牲，表现了起义者大无畏的英雄气概。长诗还侧重刻画了嘎达梅林的妻子牡丹的英雄形象，描绘了其他众多的人物，反映了较为广阔的社会生活面和起义斗争的复杂性。 Source of Information

交响诗《嘎达梅林》是女作曲家辛沪光于1956年在中央音乐学习时的毕业作品。这是她的成名作，也是一部具有极高水准的作品。

此曲音乐索材取自于一首同名蒙古民歌，并运用秦鸣趋势的结构创作而成。内容是描写并歌颂了蒙族英雄响诗嘎达梅林率领的牧民其一，及其与当时残酷的封建王爷，军阁英雄战斗的悲壮事迹。作品以悠长而富有民族风格的主题展开，不但有大漠草原的描写，也有千军万马的激战，更有对英雄之一的悲歌与颂赞。

在四川强震后，有网民将中国今年来的几件大事与奥运吉祥物“福娃”联系在一起。

奥运的五尊吉祥物“福娃”，分别是象征：

中华鲟“贝贝”。

大熊猫“晶晶”：大熊猫西息地“四川”发生大地震。

圣火“欢欢”：圣火传递侧受西藏事件影响遭到抗议活动。

藏羚羊“迎迎”：西藏发生暴动。

After the Sichuan Earthquake, netizens of China have put together a series of events linked to the "good fortune dolls", mascots of the Beijing Olympics 2008.

The five mascot dolls signifies:

Fish "Beibei", which can be found in Changjiang.

Giant Panda "Jingjing" which can be found in Sichuan. ( Sichuan Earthquake )

Sacred Fire "Huanhuan" ( Riot due to the Tibet incident )

Tibetan Antelope "Yingying" ( Tibet Unrest 2008 )

Swallow "Nini" ( Shandong train derailing incident )

The incidents are in one way or another, linked to "Jingjing", "Huanhuan", "Yingying" and "Nini".
The only mascot free from troubles now is the mascot "Beibei".
As "Beibei" signifies a kind of fish which can only be found in Changjiang, netizens are worried that Changjiang might be the next in line for disasters.

JIANGYOU, China (AFP) - - China on Sunday declared three days of mourning and suspended the Olympic torch relay nearly a week after a massive quake struck the country's southwest, as the death toll continued to mount.

I Am: A Man A Woman Looking for: A Woman A Man The announcements came after a powerful aftershock rattled devastated Sichuan province, killing at least three people and hampering China's efforts to help nearly five million homeless facing the threats of disease and floods.

From Monday, the government ordered the national flag to fly at half-mast for three days and called for three minutes of silence nationwide at 2:28 pm (0628 GMT) Monday, exactly one week after the massive quake struck.

During the period of national mourning, the Olympic torch relay -- eagerly awaited across China -- has been suspended, organisers of the Beijing summer Games announced.

Authorities on Sunday raised the number of confirmed deaths to 32,476 from the quake and revised upward the strength of the quake to 8.0 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey has put its strength at a magnitude of 7.9.

Sunday's aftershock, with a magnitude of 6.0, shook some of the worst-hit parts of Sichuan, killing at least three people in the town of Jiangyou, local government official Liao Boxun told AFP by phone.

People in the town, which was dotted with thousands of blue tents for quake homeless, said the aftershock had spread new fears among a population already traumatised.

"When the aftershock hit, mothers hugged their crying children and tried to comfort them, telling them everything would be OK," Dai Yong, who works in Jiangyou, told AFP.

The region has suffered at least 24 aftershocks of 5.0 or above on the Richter scale since Monday's quake, amid all-out efforts to rescue more than 9,500 people still buried under the rubble of collapsed structures.

Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday urged scientists at the China Seismological Bureau to improve research on earthquakes and develop better warning systems, the Xinhua state news agency said.

Two more people were pulled to safety after improbably surviving six days under the chunks of concrete and other debris, but the pace of such miracle rescues slowed markedly.

Officials have estimated the final death toll could eventually top 50,000.

In a bid to help quake survivors, two US military planes packed with food, power generators and other goods flew into Sichuan province, the first aid that China has accepted from foreign armed forces.

Rescue experts from Japan, Russia, Singapore and South Korea, as well as Taiwan and Hong Kong, have been allowed in to help the effort.

Rain also compounded the misery for many of the estimated 4.8 million who have been left without homes.

Tens of thousands of people huddled in appalling conditions in the town of Maoxian under leaky makeshift rain covers, in dire need of food, medicine and shelter, the Sichuan News Online site reported.

"The people have gone from one disaster to another," the report said.

Flood fears also persisted, with the Sichuan government saying landslides triggered by Monday's earthquake had blocked rivers and streams in at least 21 places, causing water levels to swell dangerously behind the rubble.

China had already on Saturday evacuated thousands of people in devastated areas near the quake epicentre due to one such blocked river.

Worse is possibly to come, with China's national meteorological centre predicting torrential rains later this week in the quake disaster zone, warning they could trigger landslides.

The World Health Organisation said Saturday that the lack of safe drinking water or proper waste disposal along with cramped conditions in makeshift camps was "conducive" to disease outbreaks.

The military, however, said that nuclear facilities in the region had been checked for signs of any damage and were confirmed safe.

Relief workers by Saturday had finally restored land connections with the worst-hit counties of Beichuan and Wenchuan, allowing the full horror of the quake to begin to emerge.

Luo Hong, a 22-year-old woman who sells beer, learned that her 55-year-old father, Luo Zaiping, was killed at the coal mine where he worked.

"He worked hard his entire life. Originally he wasn't supposed to work Monday and then this happened," she said.

Xinhua reported that five employees were killed and at least three pandas were missing at the world-renowned Wolong panda breeding centre, which was heavily damaged.

The news appeared to contradict early reports that more than 80 giant pandas at the centre were confirmed safe.

i dont know whether to participate in that concert. i cant commit but i cant let him down. there already is not enough and i'm backing out. i know it isnt right, but i have other commitments during my holidays.

i have to go overseas since it's all set already. i have my entire first month of holiday dedicated to SYCO and my job-to-be. second month to SYCO, Ruanxian and Xi'an. Third month to maybe-beijing and hongkong.

and since i have a packed schedule like this, it is almost impossible to commit.

i want to play in it! it isnt "some experience" to play such pieces. it's an experience that is not easy to come by.. the pieces are not easy. the pieces are not common. iknow it would be fun. but i cant.

i'm afraid to let you down because you've helped me up before.
you've given me so many chances to build my resume.

大年初三！

went to laoshi's house in the morning-or rather, afternoon? or is it noon? around 12 plus 1. haha. to bai nian. of course. had fun. haha! AND I WON KENNY'S MONEY!! heh. thats why i like new year. can gamble! but i still dont know how to gamble on mahjong. E.T.Y.K! TEACH ME!!! :P

anyway, reached NMS at around 4. rubbished alot. AND I SAW XU HUAN LIANG. and we took photo cos edward wanted to. -.- haha! so funny can! its not like the first time i see him la. but its the first time he smile and smile and say hello and TAKE A PHOTO. OMG! haha! he's damn cool! (oh this reminds me of finding a song. haha! brb)

&&! we're so obsessed over the choir pieces we're dealing with now! Singing session never stops can! even after returning to school. Laughs* chinese pop session sparked off with xu xai xiang's ting hai. haha! super funny can! a gig king is just a gig king. no songs can ever get him dumb founded. lol!

Gustav Holst

Gustav Holst (21 September 1874 - 25 May 1934) was an English composer and was a music teacher for over 20 years. Holst is most famous for his orchestral suite The Planets. Having studied at the Royal College of Music in London, his early work was influenced by Ravel, Grieg, Richard Strauss, and fellow student Ralph Vaughan Williams, but most of his music is highly original, with influences from Hindu spiritualism and English folk tunes. Holst's music is well known for unconventional use of metre and haunting melodies.

Gustav Holst wrote almost 200 catalogued compositions, including orchestral suites, operas, ballets, concertos, choral hymns, and songs.

The Planets

The Planets Op. 32 is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. The Planets is the most-performed composition by an English composer. Its first complete public performance was on October 10, 1920 in Birmingham, with Appleby Matthews conducting. However, an earlier invitation-only premiere occurred during World War I on September 29, 1918, in London's Royal Albert Hall, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult.

The elaborate score of The Planets produces unusual, complex sounds by using some unique instruments and multiples of instruments in the large orchestra (like Mahler's Sixth of 1906), such as three oboes, three bassoons, two piccolos, two harps, bass oboe, two timpani players, glockenspiel, celesta, xylophone, tubular bells, and organ (see "Instrumentation" below). Holst had been influenced by Stravinsky, who used four oboes and four bassoons in his Rite of Spring (1912-1913) and by Schoenberg's 1909 composition titled "Five Pieces for Orchestra".

The work is scored for four flutes (third and fourth doubling piccolo, fourth also doubling "bass flute in G" (alto flute) ), three oboes (the third doubling bass oboe), English horn, three clarinets in A and B flat, bass clarinet in B flat, three bassoons, contrabassoon, six French horns in F, four trumpets in C, three trombones, tenor tuba in B flat, tuba, timpani (six drums in total, requiring two players), bass drum, snare drum, cymbals, triangle, tambourine, gong, tubular bells, glockenspiel, xylophone, celesta, organ, two harps and strings.

The suite has seven movements, each of them named after a planet and its corresponding Roman deity (see also Planets in astrology):

Mars, the Bringer of War
Venus, the Bringer of Peace
Mercury, the Winged Messenger
Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity
Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age
Uranus, the Magician
Neptune, the Mystic

With the exception of the first two movements, the order of the movements corresponds to increasing distance of their eponymous planets from the Earth. Some commentators have suggested that this is intentional, with the anomaly of Mars preceding Venus being a device to make the first four movements match the form of a symphony. One alternative explanation may be the ruling of astrological signs of the zodiac by the planets. If the zodiac signs are listed along with their ruling planets in the traditional order starting with Aries, ignoring duplication, Pluto (then undiscovered and now de-planetised), and the luminaries (the Sun and the Moon), then the order of the movements matches. Another possibility, this time from an astronomical perspective, is that the first three movements, representing the inner terrestrial planets, are ordered according to their decreasing distance from the Sun. The remaining movements, representing the gas giants that lie beyond the asteroid belt, are ordered by increasing distance from the Sun. Critic David Hurwitz offers an alternative explanation for the piece's structure: that "Jupiter" is the centrepoint of the suite and that the movements on either side are in mirror images. Thus "Mars" involves motion and "Neptune" is static; "Venus" is sublime while "Uranus" is vulgar, and "Mercury" is light and scherzando while "Saturn" is heavy and plodding. (This hypothesis is lent credence by the fact that the two outer movements, "Mars" and "Neptune," are both written in rather unusual quintuple meter.)

"Neptune" was the first piece of music to have a fade-out ending. Holst stipulates that the women's choruses are "to be placed in an adjoining room, the door of which is to be left open until the last bar of the piece, when it is to be slowly and silently closed", and that the final bar (scored for choruses alone) is "to be repeated until the sound is lost in the distance". Although commonplace today, the effect bewitched audiences in the era before widespread recorded sound - after the initial 1918 run-through, Holst's daughter Imogen (in addition to watching the charwomen dancing in the aisles during "Jupiter") remarked that the ending was "unforgettable, with its hidden chorus of women's voices growing fainter and fainter... until the imagination knew no difference between sound and silence".
